Physiotherapy Support
for Concussion &
Post-Concussion Presentations
PhysioPhil provides physiotherapy care for people who have experienced a concussion or continue to notice symptoms following a head or body impact. Our approach is focused on understanding how concussion-related symptoms affect movement, balance, neck function, and everyday activities, so care can be tailored to your individual needs.
Physiotherapy for concussion is guided by professional assessment and current clinical principles. Care is adapted over time based on how each person presents and responds.
What is a Concussion?
A concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury that can occur after a forceful movement of the head or body. This usually involves a rapid acceleration–deceleration of the brain, which means a direct impact to the head is not always required for a concussion to occur.
Concussion may be associated with a wide range of physical, sensory, and cognitive symptoms. These can include headache, dizziness, changes in balance, neck discomfort, sensitivity to light or noise, fatigue, and changes in concentration. Some people notice these symptoms settle within a few weeks, while others continue to experience symptoms for a longer period.

When concussion-related symptoms persist beyond the initial phase, this is commonly referred to as a post-concussion presentation or post-concussion syndrome. These ongoing presentations can involve a combination of physical, neurological, and movement-related factors, which is why careful assessment and appropriate management are important.
Concussions commonly occur alongside neck and upper-body injuries, such as whiplash, particularly following sporting injuries, falls, or motor vehicle accidents. For this reason, physiotherapy assessment often includes the cervical spine (neck), posture, and movement patterns, as well as balance and physical tolerance to activity.
Management of concussion typically involves education, activity guidance, and physical assessment to support a safe and appropriate return to work, study, and physical activity. Physiotherapy may also be used to support associated musculoskeletal and movement-related concerns.
How Physiotherapy Can Support
Physiotherapy plays an important role in supporting people with concussion and post-concussion presentations, particularly where symptoms involve movement, balance, or the neck.
Physiotherapy for concussion-related concerns may focus on:
- Neck and upper body movement
- Balance and coordination
- Gradual return to physical activity
- Physical tolerance to everyday tasks
- Education about movement and activity management
Physiotherapy services are tailored to individual needs. Outcomes may vary, and treatment plans are developed following a professional assessment.
